Dear Grantees, Fellows, and Other Friends of The Mayday Fund,

We write to share the bittersweet news that, after nearly 25 years of outstanding service, Christina Spellman will be stepping down as Mayday’s Executive Director in 2027.

Christina has left an indelible mark on the Fund, on our fellows and grantees, and on the pain field more broadly. Under her leadership, Mayday has awarded more than 300 grants totaling more than $25 million and supported 144 fellows in support of our mission to alleviate human pain.

Since joining Mayday in 2001, Christina has been the public face of the organization, building strong relationships with experts in the field; cultivating grant projects; and nurturing the next generation of pain researchers and leaders. Her innate curiosity, deep intellect, and steadfast commitment to the organization’s mission have made Christina a singular force at Mayday.

To ensure continuity of operations and a smooth transition, Christina plans to remain in her role until her successor is on board. Chaya Cassell, Mayday’s outstanding Grants Manager, will remain in that critical role, providing significant operational support.

We will share more details about the search for Christina’s successor in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please join us in congratulating Christina on her remarkable tenure at Mayday, thanking her for her many contributions, and wishing her well in her next chapter.

Sincerely,

The Mayday Fund Board of Directors
